Dying Matters Week 2018 - 14 to 20 May 2018

Raising awareness of dying, death and bereavement

Dying Matters Week 2018 runs from 14th til 20th May 2018.

2017's theme 'What can you do' was so positive that it is being kept for 2018.

Events have been organised across Reading and there is something for everyone with lots of different ways to get involved.

The aim of the week is to get everyone talking and to let people know how they can share their wishes with loved ones and take control by planning for the future in a positive way.

Bereavement support is enmeshed within all the events, but is not a specific event in itself.

There is also an additional event:

Dying Matters; Ok To Talk About It For Our Wellbeing- Wednesday 16th May- 10am-2:30pm Hexagon lower foyer

In many communities dying is a subject that is not openly discussed which often has a negative impact on people’s mental health.

Berkshire Healthcare Foundation Trust and Reading Borough Council are working with their partners and grass root communities to organise an event that marks both mental health awareness week and dying matters week, both running 14th-20th May. Groups involved include; Acre, Women of Vision, Utulivu Women’s Group, the Sudanese Community, the Gambian Community and many others.

Everyone is invited to share in the wealth of Reading’s community assets and also hear how we can deal with loss while maintaining our wellbeing. The lead speakers will be Janet Regina Bockarie—a local community nurse and a great community pillar- on how she prepared for and dealt with the loss of her husband after battling with a long term condition for 17 years. Also Bridget Maingi—a Mental Health nurse and a another great community pillar who lost her daughter after a very short illness three years ago.

There will be other additional guest speakers, relaxed and friendly discussion groups and information on what is happening locally in the community, as well as details on how people can get involved in Reading’s Cultural Commissioning Programme to strengthen our communities more all for our wellbeing.

Everyone is welcome.
