We are a ‘Good' Ofsted registered day nursery situated in Caversham, on the outskirts of Reading.

We serve children and families from the local community and beyond and from a wide variety of cultural and ethnic backgrounds. We have places for up to 130 children on a daily basis.

We open from 08.00 am to 6.00 pm, Monday to Friday, 51 weeks of the year. We support children with learning difficulties and/or disabilities and children who speak English as an additional language.

Updated January 2024

1: How does the setting identify children with additional needs or SEND?

Your child’s key person monitors and supports your child’s development through our observation and record keeping processes. This information is used to plan appropriate activities and experiences for your child taking into account their needs, likes, dislikes and preferred learning style. This enables us to identify and intervene at an early stage if there are concerns about your child’s progress/development.

We would work closely with you and any other practitioners involved in your child’s care to support their individual needs.

The staff team are supported in their work with children who have special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) by the setting’s SENCO (special educational needs co-ordinator), who is able to attend further training and access information to support children who have additional needs.

2: How will I be informed / consulted about the ways in which my child is being supported?

We work in partnership with you and we have a range of ways in which we would keep you informed of the support we are providing for your child.

When your child starts at the nursery we will ask you to attend an induction meeting, this will allow us to gather information from you about how best to care for and support your child.

Your child’s key person will be your main point of contact and they will feed back to you on a daily basis about your child’s day and the progress they have made.

Your child's development will be tracked and monitored by their key person and this will be shared with you via an online App. We would also encourage you to contribute to this record. For some children with SEND we have found a communication book shared between nursery and home has been a useful tool to use.

If your child has SEND or requires additional support, we will hold regular meetings with you to discuss their progress and to consult with you about the best way to support your child.

We would encourage you to share your knowledge of your child with us and information from any other practitioners involved in supporting your child e.g. a speech and language therapist’s report.

3: How will the setting adapt the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for my child's needs?

We consider every child to be an individual and we have a robust system in place which allows us to understand and plan for children’s individual needs and interests.

In order to do this effectively and to provide a consistent approach, we would work in consultation with you and any other practitioners involved in supporting your child.

For some children with SEND we implement an individual learning plan. This plan details targets for us to work towards with your child, to help them develop and progress at a rate which is appropriate to them. This plan is drawn up in consultation with you and takes into account any advice given by other practitioners involved in supporting your child.

These plans are reviewed on a regular basis and are always shared with parents.

4: What teaching strategies does the setting use for children with additional needs or learning difficulties?

We have over many years cared for children with a range of special educational needs and this has helped to build up our knowledge of useful strategies to use to support a child’s development, e.g. visual timetables, Makaton, Attention Autism, Sensory Circuits.

However, every child is an individual and we would initially consult with you and use our own knowledge, gained through observation of your child, before deciding which strategies may be appropriate to use.

We always welcome visits from specialists working with individual children. This is always done in consultation with parents and it can be useful for allowing a holistic picture of a child to be built up.

To support the needs of individual children particularly, those with any special educational needs, we work with and seek support from a range of other professionals. These include speech and language therapists, educational psychologists, health visitors and physiotherapists. We have procedures in place to ensure any information shared with other professionals is only done so with the consent of the parents and in line with our confidentiality policy.

5: What additional support does the setting provide for children with additional needs or SEND?

The staff team are supported in their work with children with special educational needs and disabilities through the setting’s SENCO, who is able to attend further training and access information to share with the child’s family and the staff team to better meet the needs of all children.

If your child requires additional resources or support, the nursery will initally make an application to Reading Borough Council’s Early Intervention Panel. This panel will consider a child’s need and if appropriate they will award funding to the nursery to support the child. If appropriate we have experience of applying for and implementing EHCP's for children who need ongoing support.

6: How will the setting monitor my child's progress and how will I be involved in this?

Your child's Key Person regularly observes your child to help them monitor their progress and ensure that the activities we provide meet their individual needs and help them to progress.

Your child's development will be tracked and monitored by their key person and this will be shared with you via an online App. We would also encourage you to contribute to this record, recording your child’s development in the home environment.

These records are also used to provide information for your child's transition record when they move to a new setting or on to school.

In addition, as part of the EYFS, we are required to provide you with a written summary of your child's progress between the ages of 24 months and 36 months.  This check will detail your child's development in three prime areas, which are:

  • Physical,

  • Communication and language

  • Personal, social and emotional.

It will also tell you how we are helping to support your child's development.  This document can be shared with your health visitor to help give them a full picture of your child's progress when they carry out your child's Healthy Child Developmental Review.

7: How do you ensure children with additional needs or SEND can be included in the same activities as other children, including trips?

The nursery is committed to providing appropriate and high quality care and education to all the children who attend.  We believe all children, including those identified as having special educational needs, have a common entitlement to a broad and balanced academic and social curriculum, which is accessible to them and fully inclusive.

The nursery will work with you and any other practitioners to understand your child’s needs and where possible make reasonable adjustments to allow full access for your child to these entitlements.

8: How accessible is the building for children with mobility difficulties / wheelchair users?

The nursery building has some physical restrictions in relation to access as it is an old building spread over several floors. Staff work hard to try to overcome these restrictions and each case is assessed on an individual basis and where possible, changes are made to overcome these restrictions.

9: How will you support my child's transition to a new setting or school?

Your child will be supported by their key person during a time of transition. Their individual needs will be taken into consideration and their family consulted throughout the process.

When your child moves on to school the key person will prepare a report detailing your child’s progress, which will be shared with you before being passed on to school.

If your child leaves to attend another setting a summary of their developmental records will be passed on to you for you to share with the new setting.

If your child has additional needs we will make every effort to share our knowledge of working with them with the new setting. This is done through meetings, visiting the school and inviting the practitioners’ from the new setting to visit the child in nursery. This is always done in consultation with you.

In addition special activities designed to prepare your child for the transition, will take place in the term before a child starts school, e.g. spending time with children who will be attending the same school

10: How does the setting assess the overall effectiveness of its SEN provision and how can parents / carers take part in this evaluation?

If your child has a targeted learning plan, it will be reviewed regularly by the SENCO and key person to assess what progress a child has made and to plan their next steps. This information is shared in a meeting with you and you will be asked to comment on their progress and to contribute to the formulation of their next plan.

The child’s key person and the nursery SENCO are always available to listen to your comments and views on the SEN provision.

11: Who should I contact if I am considering registering for a place at the setting?

To arrange to visit the nursery or to discuss availability of nursery spaces please contact Jane Kemp, Admissions Adminstrator on 0118 947 1847 or visit our website www.chilternntc.com for more information.

12: What arrangements does the setting have for feedback from parents / carers, including compliments and complaints?

We are happy to discuss any aspect of your child’s care with you at any time; your first point of contact would be your child’s key person. However the Nursery Manager, SENCO or Deputy Managers are also available to listen to your views and feedback.

Annually we carry out a parental questionnaire, which allows us to understand the needs of all parents and, if necessary, make changes to our service to meet these needs.
