Early Years Private, Voluntary & Independent Settings

Description

At Abbeymore we take deep pride in building strong bonds with our families. Children settle quickly and adapt to the daily routines with the help of our keyworker system. At the start, parents and children are invited to attend an All About Me session to discuss children's likes, dislikes and developmental needs.  Settling-in sessions are then offered during which time your child will have a keyworker assigned to them.

Regular observations and assessments ensure that children's current developmental needs and skills are recorded and shared with parents using the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Framework. Where a child is identified as needing more support, an action plan is put into place and shared with parents. A graduated approach is followed when identifying special/additional needs and parents are encouraged to notify staff or keyworkers of any concerns they might have about their child's development.

Every child has an electronic learning account which contains information about their learning and progress. Parents can contribute to the page by uploading any special life events, celebrations or home learning. Where a child has been identified as needing support, an Early Years Inclusion Plan will be put in place which highlights the ways the nursery staff are supporting the child.

When required, Abbeymore will liaise with external agencies, such as educational psychologists, speech and language therapists or Early Years Advisors to meet your child's needs. Parental permission will be sought prior to this.

Different teaching strategies are on offer such as 1:1 support, basic Makaton signing, PECS and visual timetables. Some staff have training on Intensive Interactions and work towards reaching children's speech and language targets.

Additional staff in each room ensure that our setting is able to meet children's welfare needs. Early Years Inclusion Funding can be applied for to help support children if parents or staff feel it necessary. Staff can provide parents with information on where to access further advice such as local children's centres, speech and language drop-in clinics and Local Educational Authority services available to them.

All children learn by following our In the Moment play-based approach to learning. At Abbeymore, children are taught following the Bright Beginnings Curriculum which focuses on life skills and nurturing children's wellbeing. We provide access for wheelchair users via our side entrance.

Staff support children with transitioning to school by providing talking points, books and roleplay. Teachers from our neighbouring schools also visit the setting to meet children, and staff to discuss their progress.

Parents are actively encouraged to provide the setting with feedback and share their experiences through our Parenting surveys and Suggestion box.

Updated: 16.11.2023

1: How does the setting identify children with additional needs or SEND?

Our keyperson approach ensures that staff get to know children quickly. The staff build a picture of what children can do based on daily observations, communication with parents and summative assessments. Any gaps in learning are identified using the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework which will be shared with parents. A graduated approach is taken to identifying additional needs and parents are involved from the beginning. The keyperson will work closely with our qualified SENCo to implement an action plan to support your child. Where parents or staff request additional support, staff will work closely with external agencies.

Staff will also ask parents to share their child's 2-year report from Health Visitors with the setting.

2: How will I be informed / consulted about the ways in which my child is being supported?

If a Key Person becomes concerned about a child’s learning and development, concerns will be shared with the nursery's Special Educational Needs Coordinator.   A graduated approach is taken to identifying additional needs/support.

Regular meetings are held with the child’s Key Person to keep parents up date with their child’s development, achievements and next steps.

3: How will the setting adapt the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for my child's needs?

The child’s progress will be monitored according to the Early Years Foundation Stage framework and shared using our electronic learning journey. Additional monitoring of progress in relation to special educational needs and disability will be recorded in the support plan. When planning for learning experiences and activities the teaching strategies and provision will be incorporated, so as to ensure that the child has full access to the curriculum. Alongside the support plan, the child will have an individual education plan (IEP) which records targets, strategies and timing of this achievement. These are reviewed frequently, based on the child’s capability.

4: What teaching strategies does the setting use for children with additional needs or learning difficulties?

This can be a number of different strategies, depending on each individual and the need they had. We are able to gain further resources if needed and are able to put necessities in place these include:

-       A visual timetable (to support them with their daily routine)

-     Use of now and next visuals

-     Use of Makaton

-       Small group sessions

-       Specific resources (for that child’s needs)

-       One to one time with that child’s key worker

-      Attention Autism strategies

5: What additional support does the setting provide for children with additional needs or SEND?

If at a review meeting it is felt that external support is required, this will be discussed and agreed with the parents before any referrals are made. A referral will then trigger intervention through the Education, Health and Care needs assessment where a My Support Plan will be completed with the advice and support of the relevant external support service.

In certain circumstances we can provide additional support / resources for children with SEND. The local Authority in each council will have set criteria for each case and if the needs meet the criteria funding and extra resources may be made available. If training is made available to enable us to care for a child with additional or SEND we would also invite parents along to join in too.

6: How will the setting monitor my child's progress and how will I be involved in this?

The SENCO and Key Person, in consultation with the child’s parents, will start to ‘The My Support Plan’ as well as the Local Authority Send Development Journal. In addition to the My Support Plan Booklet the SENCO, in consultation with the Nursery Manager, may need to arrange for additional staff development or training and or the acquisition of specific learning materials or specialised equipment.

The My Support Plan Booklet  is reviewed regularly with the child's Key Person, Parents and SENCO as required depending on the child’s needs and progress; as a guide this should be at least three monthly. The involved external support services should be invited to the review meeting as necessary. Where possible complete the Child’s views, thoughts and feelings page in the My Support Plan Booklet to gain the child’s awareness of her/his needs and how these could be best supported.

7: How do you ensure children with additional needs or SEND can be included in the same activities as other children, including trips?

We provide a differentiated curriculum in the setting and so experiences are provided which allow all children to participate.  One to one support can be provided for any children with additional needs or SEND when needed.

8: How accessible is the building for children with mobility difficulties / wheelchair users?

The nursery has a ramp at the rear of the nursery for wheelchair users and has a lift to access the rooms upstairs

9: How will you support my child's transition to a new setting or school?

How will you support my child’s transition to a new setting or school?

As children develop from birth throughout childhood they move, or make a transition from one learning environment or setting to a new one. Often, these transitions involve a process of change that requires them to adapt their thoughts, feelings and behaviours to meet new expectations.
