Parkinson's UK Self-Management Programme in Reading - Autumn 2018
We are pleased to announce that Parkinson’s UK will be running a face to face self-management group in Reading / Henley this autumn.
Self-management groups bring 12 people with Parkinson’s, partners and carers together in a local venue. There’ll be printed information about self-management to discuss and people can learn from each other’s experiences. There will also be an opportunity to develop a personal self-management plan covering important things like exercise, relationships, medication and taking care of yourself physically and emotionally.
Delivered over 6 weeks (2½ hours per week) our self-management groups are led by trained volunteer facilitators. These facilitators are either people with Parkinson’s and/or current carers of people with the condition.
Our experience is that people really value the chance to meet others and talk through some of the bigger questions about life with Parkinson’s.
People tell us that as a result of attending the programme they feel:
- armed with information and knowledge
- more confident, positive, in control and able to move forward
- less alone as a result of meeting others
Participants also say they gain:
- greater self-awareness and insight
- a personal action plan for doing specific things such as exercise, hobbies and therapeutic activities
- improved speech as a result of talking in the group
The Self-Management Group in Reading will meet as follows:
Day: Tuesday
Dates: 9 October, 16 October, 23, October, 30 October, 6 November, 13 November
Time: 10:30 am - 1:00 pm
Venue: We are currently finalising the venue and will provde further details soon.
Online training
We also run the programme online, which is great for people of working age or who prefer to do things from their own home.
In the Thames Valley we plan to run a morning online group (10.30am – 11.30am, starting Wednesday 3 October) and an evening online group (7.00pm – 8.00pm, starting Wednesday 17 Oct). Both groups last 6 weeks, with an additional welcome session the week before the start.
