What is a pre-school?

Pre-schools were formerly called playgroups and some prefer to stay with that title. They are organised by the local community or voluntary groups on a not-for-profit basis, often with help from parents. Pre-schools cater for children aged between 3 and 5 years old, but some also have places available for 2 year olds.

What care does a pre-school offer?

Pre-schools offer sessional day care that usually open during term times. Most of the sessions are for 3 hours, either in the morning or the afternoon. Whilst at pre-school, children will begin the first stage of the National Curriculum. This is called the Foundation Stage, where children learn through planned play. Children develop their speaking, listening and persistence skills and learn early reading, writing and numeracy skills.

Pre-schools are registered with OFSTED and are regularly inspected.
