Council tax benefit has been replaced by a localised benefits reduction
scheme. Councils will be able to choose exactly how the new council tax support scheme will work in their area.
This means that councils need to design their own scheme to provide help with council tax.
However, the Government has said pensioners will not be affected by local schemes and should receive the same support as they did under the national council tax benefit scheme. All the changes in the local scheme will fall on working age households.
Single person discounts and exemption for those who are severely mentally impaired and have learning disabillities will not be changed in the new scheme.
For information about the local scheme, please call Reading Borough Council benefits service on 0118 937 3707.
