Compass Recovery College now have an updated schedule for February – March 2021, including a new visual art course and a third Helping Hands course for volunteers, befrienders and those supporting lonely and vulnerable people.

Mindfulness:  2nd Feb 30th March, 12.00-1.00pm

Some people may think about wellbeing in terms of what they have, but evidence shows that what we do and the way we think have the biggest impact on our wellbeing. Becoming more aware of the present moment means noticing the sights, smells, sounds and tastes that we experience, as well as the thoughts and feelings that occur from one moment to the next. Being more grounded and aware of our surroundings means we are less likely to be overwhelmed and more able to cope better.

 

A Good Nights Sleep:  Wed 3rd Feb & Wed 10th Feb, 16.00-17.00pm

 Sleep is more important than you might think. A single sleepless night can make us irritable and moody the following day. It’s not surprising therefore that sleep problems may have an impact on our mental health and wellbeing. This is a two-session course that will look at the factors that can adversely affect our sleep - you might be surprised at how many there are.

 

Creative Writing: Friday 12th Feb, 12.00-13.30pm

 Creative writing can help us process emotions, gain perspective and get into a ‘creative flow’ which calms the mind and lightens our mood. Creativity in a supportive environment enables us to come together in challenging times and express ourselves. Working with a professional writer, you can take part in different creative writing exercises designed to stimulate the mind and get you writing!

 

Introduction to Depression: Mondays, 15th Feb – 8th March, 11.00am-12.00pm

 This course considers how depression affects us and how we can cope and manage with it.

 

Storytelling: Wednesdays, 17th Feb 10th March, 12.00-13.00pm

Telling stories helps us make sense of our situation. We learn new skills, improve self-confidence and make social connections. Sharing stories is a way to value ourselves and have a sense of purpose. It can also provide structure at a time when normal life has been disrupted. Compass is working with Real Time Video and Story Buddies, an innovative, digitally based story telling project, to provide people with the chance to create and share stories.

 

Art course: Wednesdays, 24th Feb 31 March, 4.00-5.30pm

You don’t have to be an artist to enjoy artistic activities. This course involves fun, creative activities where you can develop new art or brush up on existing skills.

 

Becoming More Resilient: Thursdays, 4th March 18th March, 19.00-20.00pm

Resilience is not just our ability to bounce back, but also our capacity to adapt in the face of challenges whilst maintaining our mental wellbeing. In this course we will look at how we deal with pressure, reducing the impact stress has on our lives and the practical steps we can take towards achieving resilience

 

Introduction to panic attacks: Mondays, March 15th – 29th, 11.00am -12.30pm

This course supports students to gain an understanding of panic in a safe and supportive environment and help us respond to panic attacks differently
