The Green Room School

The Green Room Foundation runs schools in Windsor, Berkshire (GRW) and Kingsley, Hampshire (GRK) for young people who can no longer access mainstream education. Using a combination of therapeutic, academic, creative and physical education, we aim to significantly change the lives of our pupils and their families, to start a path to a better life. Pupils are given the opportunity to rise above the negative experiences they’ve endured. We instill a willingness to learn and an opportunity to change. We reignite a passion for learning, raise attendance and academic levels. Most importantly we build in them a confidence to go on and lead brilliant lives and be brilliant people.

We also run a 6th Form that is designed to help pupils continue on their path to adulthood. Many of the pupils have already attended The Green Room School, and this extra time helps to prepare them for post 16 education or work.

Pupils who have graduated from GR6 can progress to The Graduate Scheme. The aim of the scheme is to assist pupils bridge the gap between leaving school and the world of work with a bespoke programme of preparation and experience. Both GR6 and Graduate Scheme pupils are based at The Swan Pub in Windsor.  The Swan provides a unique setting for pupils to continue their education, gain useful skills and become part of their community. The environment will be safe and nurturing but also provide opportunities for challenge and change.

  1. After an initial enquiry is made, we request relevant papers and Education Health Care plans from the relevant local authority.

  2. Our admissions panel will then review the documents and information gathered from the initial enquiry to determine whether a good ‘fit’ is likely.

  3. We will then invite the potential pupil, parents/carers, social/case/family workers to meet the Head of School and Head of Therapeutic and have a tour of the school. During this meeting both parties can get a feel for whether the placement is likely to work. The focus of the meeting will be the young person’s needs, thoughts, ideas and aspirations.  Once this meeting has been completed everyone can take a little time to determine whether they think the placement could work.

Please note, if the young person is unsuccessful at this stage an optional therapeutic report can be written to aid the young person in finding the right place for them.

  4. If all are in agreement we will suggest a trial day or a series of trial days so the young person can experience school and we can get a better feel for their needs.

  5. If this goes well we go back to the relevant council and agree to the placement and they will then (usually) put the proposal to their panel for a decision on the funding.

  6. Following council approval a place at The Green Room will either be offered (or declined) based on the suitability of the young person.

  7. We will then arrange a start date for the young person.

Please note, at this point that some young people need a step by step plan to help them assimilate to school life and we create this plan based on the pupils needs. It is adjusted as time goes on because some young people assimilate more quickly or more slowly than they originally thought.

It is also worth noting that some young people need to take a step back and restart their learning from an earlier year group to the one they would normally be placed in. We work collaboratively with everyone involved to find the right place for that young person. Examples of this are where a young person has missed so much school in Year 10, they need to go back to the beginning of year 10 to ensure they cover the 2 year GCSE courses in order to give them a fair chance at their GCSE’s. Another example might be where a pupil is so anxious that the goal is to get them into school regularly and then assess their learning gaps and find the best place in the school for them at that point.

  8. Once a start date has been determined the parents/carers will need to arrange transport with the relevant council.  This can take 10 days with some councils.

  9. We will request a completed referral form from the council, CTF and pupil files from the young person’s previous school, and we will require parents/carers and young people to complete registration forms, create an account on our School Management System, Arbor,  and provide consent for activities/trips/medication/etc.

  10. Meanwhile we will be working on a bespoke personalised integration plan for the young person to ensure their start with The Green Room is as successful as possible. This will include baseline academic testing, an assessment for our vocational studies and an introduction to our Level Best self actualisation programme.

  11. On arrival for their first day, each new Green Room Pupil will receive their necessary resources.

We will monitor the progress of new pupils and if the placement is not suiting them or we cannot keep them safe we will work with the young person/family/council to move them to a more suitable placement.

Other notes

The Green Room caters for school refusers and pupils with Special Educational Needs.  Our pupils tend to struggle with mental health issues, principally anxiety and benefit from psychotherapy, role modelling and, of course, education. We use the EHCP as a springboard to explore the right techniques, qualifications and therapy for that pupil. This is completely individual and we are open to explore whatever option best suits them, whether this be for specific learning difficulties or emotional and behavioural support.
