The aim of the Berkshire Autism Alert Card scheme is to provide a simple way for people living with autism, or a parent or carer, to quickly and easily explain their condition to others, giving cardholders more confidence to go out and about.
Autism Berkshire issues the Berkshire Autism Alert Card free of charge to anyone with an autism spectrum condition. More than 1,800 cards are now in use.
The card is intended to be shown if the cardholder finds themselves in a situation where they cannot easily explain their behaviour to people around them or to the emergency services.
Along with simple advice about autism spectrum conditions, the card gives the cardholder’s name and details of two emergency contacts, such as parents or carers, so that those shown the card understand they are dealing with someone with autism and what they can do to help them.
Cardholders - or their parent or guardian - can also choose to share their details with Thames Valley Police.
The Berkshire Autism Alert Card is available free of charge to anyone with a formal diagnosis of an autism spectrum condition.
Please note that all applications must be accompanied by a copy of documentation showing proof of a diagnosis. Proof can include a diagnosis letter, or a statement letter from a professional, such as a doctor, paediatrician, psychologist, social worker or school, or a medical report or assessment.
Applications can be made using the online form on the Autism Berkshire website or by downloading and completing a printed form, which should be posted to the Autism Berkshire office or scanned and emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org
