Early Years Private, Voluntary & Independent Settings

Description

Western Elms Day Nursery has been established since 1962, the current owners have run the setting since 2004.

The nursery is registered for 48 children between the ages of 3 months and 5 years and is open from 7.30 am to 6.30 pm, 52 weeks of the year.

We are situated in West Reading, a short walk from the station and the town.

As a small nursery we are proud to provide a homely atmosphere thanks to our caring, committed and professional staff team.

Our ethos is centred around the nurturing and development of each child in a safe, stimulating and happy environment. An important aspect of delivering this is the work we do involving parents/carers to ensure each child reaches their full potential.

Local Offer Updated & Reviewed - April 2023

1: How does the setting identify children with additional needs or SEND?

The owner, who has worked for several years in Portage, works closely alongside the nursery manager, key person and SENCO. Any children that have additional educational or other needs are identified.

2: How will I be informed / consulted about the ways in which my child is being supported?

Staff discuss with parents/carers on a daily basis highlighting activities and contributions from their child during the day.

Written reports are made every four months ensuring that all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) are addressed.

Feedback from these activities is both solicited and used when creating the Education, Health and Care Plan (EHC Plan).

3: How will the setting adapt the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for my child's needs?

We treat each child as an individual. Those children identified with additional needs have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHC Plan) put in place. These plans incorporate all aspects of the EYFS.

4: What teaching strategies does the setting use for children with additional needs or learning difficulties?

Teaching strategies are in place and tailored to meet the needs of each child.

5: What additional support does the setting provide for children with additional needs or SEND?

A SENCO is in place. The identified needs of the child are met which may include 1:1 support (sometimes with an individual educational plan - IEP).

Any additional equipment that may be required is sourced and additional funding may also be requested.

6: How will the setting monitor my child's progress and how will I be involved in this?

The child’s progress is monitored through observations, assessments and meetings with all involved to create their individual Education, Health and Care Plan (EHC Plan).

Daily feedback is given to the parents/carers and a report is written every four months incorporating all areas of the EYFS. The parents are invited to a meeting to discuss the report and other feedback is sought at every available opportunity. Sometimes IEP's are shared more regularly than 4 monthly.

7: How do you ensure children with additional needs or SEND can be included in the same activities as other children, including trips?

All children, including those with additional needs or SEND, take part in the full spectrum of nursery activities and outings. Risk assessments that provide for children with any additional needs are undertaken each time. These assessments are written in advance by qualified staff involved in the activity and submitted to the nursery manager for approval.

8: How accessible is the building for children with mobility difficulties / wheelchair users?

One of the downstairs rooms has a ramp to aid easy access to the back garden. Individual needs are assessed when the parents/carers initially visit the nursery.

9: How will you support my child's transition to a new setting or school?

A transition report is written. The contents are the sum of on-going discussions that have occurred between staff at the nursery, parents/carers, any third party professionals that have been involved in the child’s development and reference is made to the Education, Health and Care Plan (EHC Plan).

We encourage joint visits to the new school or setting to help ensure a smooth transition is made.

10: How does the setting assess the overall effectiveness of its SEN provision and how can parents / carers take part in this evaluation?

Regular child centred staff supervision meetings are held to discuss their key children’s development status and next step planning.

The SENCO has meetings with the owner and nursery manager to reflect on the planning and the provision.

Policies and procedures are reviewed and updated regularly.

11: Who should I contact if I am considering registering for a place at the setting?

The nursery manager should be contacted in the first instance. If she is not available, request to speak with the person in charge at that time.

12: What arrangements does the setting have for feedback from parents / carers, including compliments and complaints?

There are numerous opportunities given for parents/carers to provide feedback e.g. as part of daily discussions with staff, a section within the four month progress report and through an annual questionnaire.

The nursery has a policy and procedure in place for compliments and complaints. All such instances are logged and action taken if applicable.
