We are a small Pre-School situated on the ground floor of the YMCA Reading building. Our Pre-School has two free flow rooms where the children can enjoy play based learning. Also we have an outside space with a sheltered area.

Early Years Private, Voluntary & Independent Settings

Description

Parkside Pre-School opened in April 2016 and we are situated on the ground floor of the YMCA Reading building in Parkside Road. We run from 8.45-11.45 a.m or 1:00-3:30 p.m and we have places for 36 children aged from 2-4 years. The main YMCA Reading building has wheelchair access and also a disabled toilet, however access to the Pre-school itself is limited. We have two large rooms, children's toilets and nappy changing facilities. We also have a large outdoor space, half of which is grassed and some hard standing area, we also have a sheltered area. There is also access to a large sports hall. Our pre-school supports children with additional needs and those with English as an additional language.

1: How does the setting identify children with additional needs or SEND?

 

When registering a child at our setting, parents and carers are asked to supply information about any additional needs. There will be an opportunity for parents and carers to visit the setting and to discuss any concerns they may have and make initial plans for the child’s induction at pre-school. If the child has any involvement with outside agencies, copies of any reports and further information are requested. We work closely with our families to establish good communication between home and Pre-School, each child will have a designated keyworker and there is also a SENDCo who supports parents, children and staff in the setting and additional visits to meet with the SENDCo and Keyworker to discuss and plan for any additional needs can be arranged. Within the setting the staff observe and monitor the children's progress and development very closely and any issues or concerns will be shared with the parents and carers at the earliest opportunity.

2: How will I be informed / consulted about the ways in which my child is being supported?

We work closely with the parents and carers of all children at pre-school and parents can hold informal discussions with their child's key worker at any suitable time. Detailed progress reports and the child's Pre-School Adventure Book are shared with parents/carers once a term and observations and next steps are regularly added to the child’s Adventure Book, which parents and carers can request to see at any time. Where it has been identified that a child needs additional SEN Support, the SENDCo works with key staff and parents/carers to create a targeted plan, known as an ISP (individual support plan) to support the child. This will be reviewed regularly with parents (at least every 12 weeks, more frequently if necessary). We ensure that parents are informed of any additional support needs at all stages of their child’s development and education. We can provide parents with information on sources of advice and support. We liaise with other professionals involved with children with Special Educational Needs and their families, including during transition to other settings and schools.

3: How will the setting adapt the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for my child's needs?

We are an inclusive setting that provides a secure and nurturing environment, offering a stimulating, broad and balanced curriculum that is differentiated to meet the needs and interests of all children. Initially staff will use ongoing observational assessments to help decide on activities and experiences that are best suited to your child's stage of development, as well as to their individual needs and interests. We also use a system of planning, implementing and monitoring, evaluating and reviewing to ensure our provision meets the needs of all children. We also encourage parents/carers to be active in the role of planning for their child's learning and development.

We are a small team, however we pride ourselves on having many years experience with young children of all abilities.

4: What teaching strategies does the setting use for children with additional needs or learning difficulties?

We use a wide variety of teaching strategies and resources tailored to support the individual child's stage of development. Our teaching ensures that all children are able to access and learn in a way that is appropriate to their ability and interests. We provide stimulating activities and experiences and a wide range of teaching strategies are used including visual supports, puppets and props for story time, visual timetables, sand timers, now and next boards, sensory activities, Intensive Interactions, Attention Autism, one to one support, small group speech and language activities etc. We work in partnership with parents and any external professionals that may be involved, such as Speech & Language Therapists, Portage Service, SEN Advisory Team etc to create an Individual Support Plan that will outline SMART targets and include specific teaching strategies designed to help the child achieve their next steps etc.

5: What additional support does the setting provide for children with additional needs or SEND?

 

The SENDCo will work with the Key Person to ensure that the activities are appropriately differentiated for any child with SEND. The key person is responsible for planning and delivering the EYFS curriculum that can meet the needs of a child with SEND.

Where a child requires additional support for learning, the key person will liaise with the SENDCo to create personalised learning programmes to support that child. These could include social stories time, phonics, literacy or mathematics programmes to help support their needs. 

 Our team has some knowledge of different teaching strategies such as PECs, Makaton and social stories.

If required we will seek out support from outside agencies.

6: How will the setting monitor my child's progress and how will I be involved in this?

Children will be regularly monitored and assessed according to their needs. We do share the children’s Learning Adventure Book on a regular basis with their parents.

 

 

7: How do you ensure children with additional needs or SEND can be included in the same activities as other children, including trips?

Before any trips or activities have taken place a full risk assessment is in place. Almost all of the activities within the Pre-School are suitable for the majority of children with SEND. Staff to child ratio is kept low when out on trips (1:4) if necessary children with SEND will have a 1:1 staff member.

8: How accessible is the building for children with mobility difficulties / wheelchair users?

The Pre-School building is not accessible for wheelchair/mobility users. However the building we share with YMCA Reading has a lower floor disabled toilet and wheelchair access.

9: How will you support my child's transition to a new setting or school?

We endeavour to make the transition to a different setting as easy as possible. We will work closely with the next setting and their SENCo passing on all necessary information. We fully involve the child and parents in this process. We make different social stories of the next setting involving photographs of the new setting. If required we can arrange extra visits to our and the new setting.

10: How does the setting assess the overall effectiveness of its SEN provision and how can parents / carers take part in this evaluation?

 We give a paper copy (and email) a parent questionnaire to our parents to help us evaluate our setting. During our regular meetings of staff members we will use these to reflect on our setting
