Reviewed October 2023

1: How does the setting identify children with additional needs or SEND?

At Emmer Green Kindergarten we identify children with additional needs in a variety of ways. Admission forms are filled out by the parents to give us as much information as possible so we can then look at how we can support the individual child’s needs.

To help make it as smooth a transition as possible we invite the parents in for a pre-visit to fill out all the relevant paper work and if necessary a member of staff will also carry out a home visit. We have a key worker system in place to help with the transition and to help build a relationship with the child and their family.

We follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and each child has a Learning Journey. In this Learning Journey there are observations that the key worker uses to track the child’s progress. At age 2 a progress check is carried out on all the children to enable us to see if there is an area which needs any extra support. If a child has been identified as needing additional help then we would fill out an Early Years Intervention Plan (EYIP) to help us support the child’s development.

We follow the early year’s outcomes to help the staff with their understanding of child development through the early years. We have a Special Educational Needs Co-Ordinator (SENCO) who works alongside the staff in the setting with support from the local authority. The SENCO attends the relevant training to keep them up to date. The SENCO works together with other settings if a child attends more than one. Multi agency working is important to us and we work with the local authority and all other healthcare professionals such as teacher of the deaf, sensory consortium, Reading Borough Council and our Early Years Advisor.

2: How will I be informed / consulted about the ways in which my child is being supported?

We acknowledge that parents are children’s first and most enduring educators and we value the contribution they make. We recognise the role that parents have played, and their future role, in educating their children. The key person approach gives every child the reassurance to feel secure and cared for, helping them to become familiar with the nursery environment and to feel confident and safe within it. We recognise every child’s individuality, efforts and achievements and believe that relationships between adults and children are crucial for the child’s happiness and security. The Key Person meets the needs of each child in their care and responds sensitively to their feelings, ideas and behaviour. You will be informed of your child’s progress by a detailed hand over at the end of each day which parents can also check throughout the day on the Famly app.  Parents are able to have a discussion with their child’s keyworker/ SENCO on a regular basis both formally and informally. We also follow 'Planning In The Moment' which makes specific children the focus child for a week, at the end of that week the key worker will meet with the parents for a '5 minute meeting' relaying what has been observed over the course of the week. Each child has a Learning Journey which has written observations, photo observations and artwork in it and through this the keyworker can regularly look at this and plan for appropriate activities to boost the child’s development. In the Learning Journey there is a section for parents, to enable you to get more involved in your child’s development and learning.

3: How will the setting adapt the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for my child's needs?

We view every child as a unique individual so meeting the individual needs of each child is very important to us. We do this by looking at what stage the child is at developmentally so we can adapt the EYFS to suit the individual child’s needs. We work with multi agencies taking advice and implementing it when needed. Early Years Intervention Plans (EYIP’s) are very helpful when planning the next steps for the child. We use observations as a form of assessment and we feel that observing is the best way of finding out where a child is in their development. Using the EYFS we look at the prime areas individually and all physical aspects. As a nursery we make sure that our resources are accessible to all and that children have the opportunity to take part in all activities. While following the child's needs and interests we plan activities for this inline with the EYFS.

4: What teaching strategies does the setting use for children with additional needs or learning difficulties?

We understand that every child is unique in the way they learn so we encourage them to develop at their own pace. The nursery environment can be adapted to suit children's individual needs and interests. It is very important to include the child in the decision making throughout the day and we do this by using a visual time table. We adapt activities to include all children and we make sure that all activities are suitable. Group time is carried out in smaller groups to help all children concentrate. We carry out EYIP’s to aid us in the best way to support the children in our setting. There are calm areas for children to take time out from their busy day and have quiet time. We pride ourselves in making sure that what we can offer is supported by well trained staff. All of our staff at Emmer Green Kindergarten go on relevant training courses to improve their support to all children.

5: What additional support does the setting provide for children with additional needs or SEND?

The setting supports each child by making sure that the learning environment is suitable for their individual needs. We make sure that children can access all areas so there is an opportunity for all. Resources and toys are age appropriate for each room in the setting. As a setting we have access to our local authority for specialist advice and support. We do liaise with other professionals, settings and consult with parents to make sure their child has the best support possible. At all times we meet Ofsted requirements for ratios: 1:3 for children aged 3 months-2 years; 1:4 for children aged 2-3 years; and 1:8 for children aged 3-5 years.

6: How will the setting monitor my child's progress and how will I be involved in this?

We will monitor your child’s progress by writing up an EYIP and this will be carried out and reviewed once a term. We invite you in for parent’s evenings with your key person to discuss your child’s development and this gives you an opportunity to look through your child’s Learning Journey and view their progress. At the end of each day you will also get a detailed verbal hand over with the key person or room senior. Each child has a Learning Journey where you will find observations that have been made and then linked to the EYFS. Through these observations we can then see where a child may need extra help or support. We do carry out language trackers for all of our children to make sure that they are developing at the right rate. The SENCO is there to liaise with the parents of children with additional needs/disabilities and communicate with them and others such as staff or outside agencies.

7: How do you ensure children with additional needs or SEND can be included in the same activities as other children, including trips?

We ensure that children are included by following our inclusion policy. We value the diversity of individuals. All children and families are valued in our nursery. We believe that all children matter and we give children every opportunity to achieve their best. In the EYFS we set realistic and challenging expectations that meet the needs of children. We achieve this by planning to meet the needs of boys and girls, children with special educational needs, children who are more able and children with disabilities. When we do go out on trips we make sure that the key person is present. As we work in partnership with parents we involve them as much as we can to give extra support. When the nursery goes on trips out we make sure that a risk assessment is carried out prior to going. We make sure that we take smaller groups when off-site. All our staff have their paediatric first aid which we update every 3 years and any other relevant training. When off-site we take all medication with us in case it may need to be administered. In preparation to going on any trip or outing we discuss this with all our children prior to going so they know what to expect and can prepare themselves.

8: How accessible is the building for children with mobility difficulties / wheelchair users?

We have disabled access throughout the Nursery and the setting is all on one level with wide doors to make it easy for wheel chair users. We do have ramp access to the building for parents and children to use. Parking is on site and a short distance to the nursery entrance.

9: How will you support my child's transition to a new setting or school?

When it is time to move to a new setting or on to a school we work as a team and liaise with the parents and communicate what will be happening. We then get in contact with the new school and arrange a visit from the SENCO and key person to have a meeting and handover about that child and their individual needs. A visit is set up for the child and key person to visit together. We invite the teachers to our setting to spend some time with the child. We do ask for photo books from the school so the child can get familiar with new faces and their new setting. Extra visits are very important to ensure that all children become comfortable and to make it as smooth a transition as possible. What we do to prepare children for school is lots of activities such as setting up the home corner as a school with uniforms, books and pencils so we can use our imagination and role play. We also read books about starting school and plan group discussions about big school.

10: How does the setting assess the overall effectiveness of its SEN provision and how can parents / carers take part in this evaluation?

We assess the effectiveness of our provision by having meetings with parents with children with additional needs or SEND and welcome their feedback of what they like and dislike. We carry out a SEND audit to make sure that we are meeting all criteria needed. We also follow and adhere to the SEN Code of Practice. OFSTED gives feedback to the setting after an inspection to help us make improvements.

11: Who should I contact if I am considering registering for a place at the setting?

If you are considering registering for a place at the setting you can speak to the Nursery Owner: Rebecca Hartley or the Nursery Manager: Sam Slade

Our contact details are as follows:

Telephone Number: 0118 9483310

Email Address: info.emmergreenkindergarten@gmail.com

12: What arrangements does the setting have for feedback from parents / carers, including compliments and complaints?

The setting has arrangements for feedback from the parents and this is achieved by having a regular parent questionnaires to help us take advice from parents and improve our practice. There is a compliment/complaints book available which is in reception for all to access if they wish to. If a parent was not happy and brought something to the management’s attention we listen and take everything on board. We would then discuss this with parties involved and once it is investigated we then feed back to the parents. We would give daily feedback with the parent until the parent is happy.
