Early Years Private, Voluntary & Independent Settings

Description

We are a private day nursery in Reading Town Centre in a grade 2 listed building, we are registered for 86 chidren from 3 months- 5 years. We have childrens rooms set over 3 floors, we have a garden, parents and meeting room and indoor garden area. We open form 7.30am-6.30pm and are located a short walk from Reading train station.

Our mission statement is to be the provider of choice in all the communities we serve.

We want to provide quality affordable childcare and provide the children with the best start and prepare them for school, with well trained staff who have the knowledge to support parents and plan for the individual needs of the children in a happy and safe environment.

Updated - September 2023

1: How does the setting identify children with additional needs or SEND?

The children have a keyperson who will observe the child in the setting and track the childs development, any concerns are monitored and discussed with the nursery Senco and parents.

The keyperson will monitor the childrens progress uisng the Early Years foundation stage and track the development in each of the areas. Any areas of concern can be identified and plans put in place to help the children.

Our staff wil recognise any areas that a child may need additional needs and speak to the settings Special needs Coordinator for advice. Our SENCo has attended specefic training that will help support chidren and parents.

2: How will I be informed / consulted about the ways in which my child is being supported?

The keyperson will arrange meetings, complete an IEP and find out links and outside agencies which may be able to assist with the nursery and at home.

Our key person approach is a valued tool within the setting, we ensure that the keyperson builds good relationship with the child and parents. We also have key person buddies so there is always someone to communicate to the parents and to keep the childrens development tracker up to date. Any information regarding the children will always be discussed with the parents.

Information regarding outside agencies is located on the parents notice board.

3: How will the setting adapt the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for my child's needs?

The planning is adapted for each individual child through weekly observations and activities are linked to the need of the children and their development level. Activies are adapted for individual children where needed, and resources may need to be purchased to assist the staff and help the development of the child.

All individual Education plans will be discussed between the keyperson, SENco and parents where clear outcomes will be set. The targets are monitored and given a realistic timescale before it is reveiwed. normally 4- 6 weeks depending on needs.

4: What teaching strategies does the setting use for children with additional needs or learning difficulties?

staff will adapt their teaching and the way they plan depending on the childrens needs. We will also access relevent training.

we use different methods

Visual timetables, flashcards, behaviour plans, home language dictionaries, books about me, sign language.

We will contact the speech and language therapist and invite them in if we feel we need support and they can give advice to the nursery and parents.

5: What additional support does the setting provide for children with additional needs or SEND?

We provide support for parents, and our nursery based Senco will support with additional information.

We have a budget that can be used to purchase resources, we ask the parents for ideas of what the children use at home. If the item is outside the nursery budget we have a company fund that we are able to access.

The keyperson and Senco are able to attend any appointments or meetings with the parents which relate to the childs development if required.

One to one funding- if all feel that a child would benefit from one to one support within the setting then an application will be made to the intervention panel by the SENco. The panel will decide if the child requires the level of support and funding may be given to the setting.

6: How will the setting monitor my child's progress and how will I be involved in this?

We will monitor through observation and regular updates of childs development tracker, parents will receive updates verbally and have access to the childs folder, regular one to one's are planned and parents evenings take place once per term. Parents are actively encouraged to take part and feedback with information from home, so we are able to use all evidence to evaluate a childs progress.

7: How do you ensure children with additional needs or SEND can be included in the same activities as other children, including trips?

We will complete risk assesments and adapt activities and outings where appropriate. Staff are aware through the planning and training process how activities need to be adapted to suit the needs of all the children.

8: How accessible is the building for children with mobility difficulties / wheelchair users?

Due to the nature of the building we have no access for wheelchairs- and with 3 flights of stairs can be difficult for children with mobilty difficulties although we can risk assess each individual case.

9: How will you support my child's transition to a new setting or school?

The SENco or keyperson will visit the new setting or school when the parents advise. The teacher or keyperson from a new setting will also be invited in so they are able to observe the child in an environment they are comfortable in.

The childs development folder, transistion report and any IEP will be given to the new setting.

Within the nursery we will have pictures, activities and books of information about the new setting to help the children become familiar with any new environment.

We may ask for photos of relevent people from the new setting so we can show the children.

10: How does the setting assess the overall effectiveness of its SEN provision and how can parents / carers take part in this evaluation?

Each Month the manager, deputy, room leaders and SENco will get together to discuss the provision in place for SEN. How the children are being supported and if there have been any progress. Also if we need to purchase any equipment, and any support or training that need to be arranged.

The inclusion policy is regular updated and parents are able to see this at any time, each parent is given a copy when they initially join the nursery.

11: Who should I contact if I am considering registering for a place at the setting?

Leanne Green: Nursery Manager

01189560341

12: What arrangements does the setting have for feedback from parents / carers, including compliments and complaints?

We have an open door policy where parents are able to give feedback verbally. We have a parents forum 3 times per year. Newsletters and parent mail every month where parents are able to respond confidentially. There is also a parent survey 6 times per year.

We have a parents forum and saturday stay and plays arranged for the children and parents.
