General Statement – At St Edward’s Prep we believe that all children are entitled to have their needs met and to have access to high quality teaching. The information below illustrates the school's graduated response to children’s needs. It shows the standard offer of teaching, learning and care for all pupils, the additional provision which may be needed by some pupils and the specialist provision that may be required by the few children with significant or complex needs.

1: The kinds of special educational needs for which provision is made at the school
1.1: Do you have children with SEND in your school?

We make provision for children with SEND within each of the four categories identified in the 2015 SEND Code of Practice. SEND refers to Special Educational Needs and Disabilities: Communication and Interaction Cognition and Learning Social, Emotional and Mental Health Sensory and/or Physical

1.2: What kinds of SEND do those children have?

We currently have on roll children diagnosed with: autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, speech and language difficulties and behavioural difficulties.

2: Information related to mainstream schools about the school's policies for the identification and assessment of pupils with SEND
2.1: How do you know if a pupil has SEN?
  • Some children start school with a diagnosis or with specialist support
  • Some children will be identified by school staff and referred for specialist support.
  • Some children’s need will be identified through tracking systems, testing and day to day observation by the class teacher or SENCo. These children may have needs which can be met through differentiated teaching, small group work and/or catch up in school.
3: Information about the school's policies for making provision for pupils with SEND whether or not pupils have EHC plans
3.1: Where can I find information about the school SEN Policy?

3a: How the school evaluates the effectiveness of its provision for such schools
3a.1: How do you make sure that the SEN provision is helping pupils make better progress?
  • Progress is closely tracked and monitored by class teachers, teaching assistants, the deputy head academic and SENCo.
  • Termly assessments are administered and staff meetings are held to identify those above and below expectations and address other outcomes.
3b: The school's arrangements for assessing and reviewing the progress of pupils with special educational needs
3b.1: How do you check and review the progress made by pupils with SEN?
  • Parents will be invited to an initial meeting to discuss their child’s needs, this will involve the SENCo and class teacher.
  • External professionals may be involved and will meet parents to gather information and seek views, before assessments are made.
  • Parents will be invited to meetings through the year and will be encouraged to talk to the teacher and/or SENCo if they have any concerns.
  • Reviews and Annual reviews will be timetabled and parents and professionals will discuss children to assess progress and support.
3c: The school's approach to teaching pupils with SEND
3c.1: How do your teachers help pupils with learning difficulties or disabilities to learn?

At St Edward’s Prep we believe that all children are entitled to have their needs met and to have access to high quality teaching.

3d: How the school adapts the curriculum and learning environment for pupils with SEND
3d.1: How have you made the school buildings and site safe and welcoming for pupils with SEN or disabilities?
  • Teachers and teaching assistants plan the curriculum to meet the needs of the pupils.
  • Class teacher’s meet termly with the SENCO to plan for children with identified SEN. 
  • Lessons are differentiated in various ways.
3e: Additional support for learning that is available to pupils with SEND
3e.1: Is there additional support available to help pupils with SEND with their learning?

 

All pupils will access: High quality teaching and enrichment activities within the school day, as well as access to clubs, trips and residential visits.

3e.2: How are the school's resources allocated and matched to children's special educational needs?

Some pupils with additional SEN needs will access:

- Small group work

- 1:1 catch up for English and/or

maths

- 1:1 tuition

 - Specialist external advice

- Speech and language groups

 - Social skills groups 

3e.3: How will I know if my child is getting extra support?
  • Parents will be invited to an initial meeting to discuss their child’s needs, this will involve the SENCO and class teacher. Subsequently parents will be invited back for progress meetings or can initiate a meeting if and when they feel the need.
3e.4: How is the decision made about how much/what support my child will receive?
  • Progress is tracked and some children will be offered 1:1 support.
  •  Support may be provided within lessons where needed.
  • Teaching assistants may be deployed to teach or provide additional support to small groups in English, maths or language.
  • If progress is not made then children’s needs are assessed and external advice may be sought.
3f: Activities that are available for pupils with SEND in addition to those available in accordance with the curriculum
3f.1: What social and extra-curricular activities are available for students with SEND?
  • All children are included in trips and visits as well as residential visits. We provide teaching assistant support and appropriate transport to enable this to happen. All visits are risk assessed and appropriate safety measures are put into place.
  • All of our children, including those with SEN have the opportunity to attend a range of after school clubs.
3g: Support that is available for improving the emotional and social development of pupils with SEND
3g.1: What support will there be for my child's overall well-being?
  • We provide many enrichment activities including after school clubs and trips.
  • We ensure that children’s individual needs are met in whatever way is relevant. 
  • Children attend their annual review meetings to share their views.
  • External professionals will be used to support where necessary to advise children and families who have particular concerns or requirements.

5.1: What training have the teachers and other staff who support children and young people with SEND had?
  • The SENCo has recently completed the National Award Special Educational Needs Coordination
  • All staff are trained internally by the SENCO or, on occasion, by visiting external professionals.
  • Staff may attend specialist courses which are held at external venues.
  • Regular meetings are held for support staff within school to share good practice and to train.
6: Information about how equipment and facilities to support children with SEND will be secured
6.1: What happens if my child needs specialist equipment or other facilities?

School has some equipment that can be used to support children with SEN.

Parents are encouraged to provide and equipment specific to the needs of their child – as an independent school we receive no funding for this.

Each year the SENCo makes a Development Plan with areas of Learning Support identified for funding and development.

7: The arrangements for consulting parents of children with SEND about, and involving such parents in, the education of their child
7.1: How will I be involved in discussions about and planning for my child's education?
  • Parent evenings are held twice a year for all pupils.
  • Through meetings with the teacher, SENCO and/or a relevant external professional.
  • Reviews are held at least twice a year for pupils identified with SEN.
8: The arrangements for consulting young people with SEN about, and involving them in their education
8.1: How will my child be involved in his/her own learning and decisions made about his/her education?

Children are consulted every time a Learning Profile is made or updated. They add the ‘child’s voice’ at the start and review of each cycle and the SENCo discusses the targets set and what will be put in place to support them.

9: Any arrangements made by the governing body relating to the treatment of complaints from parents of pupils with SEND concerning the provision made at the school
