Hospital Radio Reading

Hospital Radio Reading is staffed entirely by unpaid volunteers and provides a dedicated free radio service 24 hours per day to around 600 inpatients in the Royal Berkshire Hospital via channel 45 on the Hospedia bedside consoles. Our aim is to entertain and comfort patients and help in some small way to relieve the stress and boredom of their hospital stay.

We are usually on-air LIVE every weekday evening between 7 - 10pm (1pm – 10pm on Wednesdays) as well as from 10am - 10pm on Saturdays and 7am - 10pm on Sundays. At other times patients can hear an automated service of music and useful information, together with pre-recorded programmes featuring specialist music, comedy, interviews and short stories.

HRR's flagship “Record Requests” programmes are on-air every evening between 8.00 and 10.00pm as well as on Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Volunteers aim to visit each ward two or three times each week to collect requests but patients may also contact the station by dialling *800 (a free call) from the Hospedia phone at their bedside (24 hour answerphone). Family and friends are welcome to share the “Record Requests” experience by listening in on www.hrreading.org.uk and may send in requests for their loved ones via the website or by calling 0118 322 8508. A total of 6 - 7,000 such record requests are broadcast each year.

Outside broadcasts in association with the hospital’s League of Friends include our own live commentary on all Reading FC home games at the Madejski Stadium and coverage of the annual League of Friends’ Summer Fête and Christmas Carol Concert.

HRR welcomes applications from prospective new volunteers, who are happy to ward visit as well as help in the studio. They are welcome to contact the station’s Chairman, Gerard Rocks, on 0118 322 8508 or gerard@hrreading.org.uk
