Early Years Private, Voluntary & Independent Settings

Description

I run a childminding setting close to St Michaels Primary School.  This is a home from home environment where children learn through playing and having fun.  I adhere to the Early Years Foundation Stage and work in partnership with parents to ensure that each individual child in my care has the best possible experience and outcome.

Last Reviewed - October 2023

1: How does the setting identify children with additional needs or SEND?

I make observations on the children in my setting and complete a learning journal in partnership with parents.  Should any behaviours be identified, I encourage the parents to seek professional advice to fully support the individual child.  With parental consent I can liase with professionals to seek support.  The child's best interests are always paramount.

2: How will I be informed / consulted about the ways in which my child is being supported?

I work in partnership with parents.  I use a daily diary system where information about each day is shared and sent home.  Parents are encouraged to share what has happened at home too.  Learning Journals are completed for each child under school age, observations are linked to Early Years Outcomes.  These are sent home reularly and I welcome parental contribution.

I have open discussion with parents to ensure that everyone is aware of what is happening in the setting and that everyone is happy with the care provided.  Feedback and ideas are very valued.

3: How will the setting adapt the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum for my child's needs?

I follow the Early Years Foundation Stage and this is mainly child led learning, activities and play.  But there is so adult led teaching opportunities.  I use a child's interests to achieive learning objectives, this is so that they get the most enjoyment out of their time here and learn without realising it.  Thus giving them enthusiasm and motivation to learn and an interest in learning.

4: What teaching strategies does the setting use for children with additional needs or learning difficulties?

I would work in partnership with parents to identify any requirements and to ensure all needs are being met.  It is difficult to give a definitive answer as every child is unique and therefore each child will need different level of support.  I think it is best to discuss this with me on an individual basis.

5: What additional support does the setting provide for children with additional needs or SEND?

I fully support each child to the very best of my ability - it is best to discuss your indvidual needs with my directly.

However, I have steps to access my propery and only a first floor bathroom - therefore children, or families that are wheelchair users or have mobility difficulties may not be able to use my setting.

6: How will the setting monitor my child's progress and how will I be involved in this?

As mentioned earlier I provide a daily diary which is completed and sent home daily.  I encourage parents to contribute to this.

Observations are made on a child's starting points and progression in a Learning Journal and this is sent home.  Parents are actively encouraged to partipate as their involvment in their child's learning is essential.

I also like to send home photographs of the child so that the families can share and discuss their experiences.

7: How do you ensure children with additional needs or SEND can be included in the same activities as other children, including trips?

I risk assess every activitiy and trip and ensure that it is suitable for all the children in my care.

8: How accessible is the building for children with mobility difficulties / wheelchair users?

I am afraid due to the access steps and first floor bathroom, I cannot accommodate wheelchair users or children with mobility difficulties.

9: How will you support my child's transition to a new setting or school?

I work with  families, any pre-schools and the child to ensure that the child is fully supported and enthusiastic about starting a new school or setting.  This may involve visits, books, role play and lots of communication.

10: How does the setting assess the overall effectiveness of its SEN provision and how can parents / carers take part in this evaluation?

I have an effective Self Evaluation process and I seek feedback from the children and the parents that I work with.

11: Who should I contact if I am considering registering for a place at the setting?

Kate Abbott

12: What arrangements does the setting have for feedback from parents / carers, including compliments and complaints?

I have a Feedback, compliments and complaints book.  I welcome feedback in open discussion or in writing.  It is important to me that I am fully aware of the opinions of the families in my care and I strive to provide the best possible service for all.
